Lampard joins in chorus of disapproval of Wembley pitch

Frank Lampard has added to the growing number of high-profile people complaining about the state of the Wembley pitch. Earlier this week, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and his Manchester United counterpart Sir Alex Fergsuon, criticised the state of the Wembley pitch following the FA Cup semi-final defeats for their sides. Lampard feels the multi-functional use of the stadium - Wembley also hosts pop concerts as well as rugby and NFL matches - is having an adverse effect on the playing surface. The Chelsea midfielder set up both of Chelsea's goals but has since complained about how the pitch cuts up far too easily. "It wasn't good and it isn't good," Lampard told the press. "I don't know why they have so many events here and things like that. It just means the pitch cuts up and is bobbly. "It is not the way it should be kept. It should be kept in perfect condition for England games, FA Cup games and the play-offs. "At the moment it's not.&quo

New season kicks off in Finland

With the global financial crisis biting into ticket and sponsorship income – and little in the way of broadcasting revenue anyway, there has been a wide divergence in approaches to the problem in the run-up to the new season. As the richest club in the country HJK have been unaffected, and the Helsinki club's coach Antti Muurinen flashed their cash to secure the services of FC Lahti defender Pyry Karkainen, iconic Russian striker Valeri Popovitch, midfielders Sebastian Sorsa and Cheyne Fowler, plus striker Juho Makela, who returns permanently to HJK after an unhappy spell in Scotland with Hearts. HJK will start as overwhelming favourites, but they have been in that situation before and failed to bring home the trophy – not least last year, when they suffered the indignity of having to qualify for Europe via the Cup after finishing fourth in the league. Wolfsburg emerge as genuine title challengers

Ordered to vacate his Bayern Munich office in January 2007 despite a more than respectable record (back-to-back domestic Doubles in 2005 and 2006), Magath would have to wait two years and three months for the last laugh, his present side humbling his old one 5-1 in a top of the table clash with more than a hint of the changing of the guard about it. Post-match, Magath denied it was a victory to salve old wounds. Much more important, he claimed, was Wolfsburg first-place in the standings and their eight wins in a row which had taken them to the summit. Don't you believe it. The archetypal professional but an immensely proud character with it, Magath had a point to prove to Bayern, a personal mission borne out by the broad smile he substituted for his usual stony-face at the final whistle. Bayern certainly felt their former employee was more than happy to twist the knife. In the eyes of the Bavarians, Magath's unorthodox decision on 89 minutes to take off uninjured first-choice k

The Argentina striker is on loan deal with United that expires in the summer and so far there has been no agreement reached for Tevez to sign a permanent deal, with United officials believed to be reluctant to pay a £30m transfer 'fee' for the player. Real Madrid are believed to be monitoring the situation closely, while a number of other top clubs would be ready to step in if Tevez indicated he had no future with the Red Devils. However, the 24-year-old is hopeful that he does not have to leave. ''My loan deal ends in June but I cannot think of any team except United,'' Tevez told Sport Magazine . ''The United fans love me and my family is very happy, both in Manchester and in England. ''My thoughts are only about winning titles with United, and if this happens then I hope I will still be here next season. ''I do not want to play with any other team. I always follow my heart, and my heart is telling me it will be impossible for me to lea
